International School Holidays Differ from Public System

International school holidays are different from those in the public system, and they're not just random breaks 😂

Having worked in international education for over a decade, I'm often asked: "Why do international schools in Hangzhou have Christmas holidays, and even an extra spring break?" Today, I'll clarify the logic behind it!

There are just 3 core reasons, and you'll understand after reading!

❶ Curriculum follows international rhythms
Most international schools in Hangzhou use IB or A-Level curricula, such as Hangzhou International School (HIS) and Wellington College. Their academic year cycles need to sync with the global schedule. Christmas holidays aren't just for celebration; they're also key milestones for wrapping up course phases—for example, IB students use this time to polish their IA assignments, while A-Level students prepare for mock exams.

❷ Multicultural adaptation + balancing local traditions
Many international schools in Hangzhou have foreign teachers and students, and Christmas is an important holiday for them, reflecting respect for diverse cultures. But don't worry about kids missing Chinese New Year! For instance, HIS combines spring break with Qingming Festival, while schools like Huili and Wahaha Bilingual arrange a few days off during the Spring Festival, hosting temple fairs and calligraphy activities for spring couplets, fully embracing local holiday traditions.

❸ Holidays are an extension of "holistic education"
International schools don't treat holidays as just "free time." Many international schools in Hangzhou organize spring breaks (usually in April) for activities like research trips to Dunhuang or volunteer projects; summer breaks often include overseas summer schools or science and innovation camps. Unlike the public system's focus on rest, international school holidays aim to help kids apply classroom knowledge in practice.

A little local Hangzhou tip: holiday schedules vary slightly among different international schools, but the core logic is the same—adapting to international learning rhythms, not just "lying flat"!
