New Zealand is reforming post-study work visa policies in late 2026.

New Zealand 2026 Post-Study Work Visa Reform: Expanded Short-Term Graduate Visa

Immigration New Zealand has announced significant reforms to post-study work visa policies for international graduates effective late 2026. Key changes include a new Short Term Graduate Work Visa providing up to 6 months open work rights for NZQCF Level 5-7 graduates, expanded PSWV eligibility for Graduate Diploma holders with existing bachelor's degrees, and clearer open work visa conditions allowing self-employment from April 20, 2026.

For Chinese students, the global bachelor's plus NZ Graduate Diploma combination offers a cost-effective pathway: a 1-year GD plus 1-year open work visa. This compares favorably to Australia's 485 visa which now has a reduced age cap of 35 and doubled fees to AUD 4,600. NZ advantages include lower visa fees (approx NZD 700) and self-employment allowance.

Question

Who is the 6-month Short Term Graduate Work Visa for?

AIAIGAnswer
Graduates of NZQCF 5-6 Diploma programs not meeting PSWV requirements, or Bachelor graduates needing transition time. Provides buffer for finding employers and preparing AEWV applications.

Question

How does the global bachelor's plus NZ GD combination work?

AIAIGAnswer
A Chinese student with a 4-year bachelor's completes a 1-year NZQF Level 7 GD, then applies for up to 1 year open work rights. Total: 2 years investment for overseas work experience, far cheaper than a master's.
